Review [ENG]: Verbatim 3.5 inch External HDD eSATA & USB Combo Drive 500GB

Darco | December 22, 2008

If you are asking us, Verbatim is doing more than fine in this field. Above all their devices have high-quality built and don’t fall behind the competition. With price around 85€ (125$) this 500GB external HDD presents itself as very good purchase. Verbatim 3.5 inch External HDD eSATA & USB Combo Drive 500GB @ InsideHW

Review [ENG]: OCZ Core V2 60 GByte MLC-SSD

Darco | December 15, 2008

With the V2 OCZ presents - in the still very yound SSD market - the second generation of its Core SSD series. According to the datasheet the V2 shines bright with 170 MB/s throughput reading, 98 MB/s writing and with 0.1 milliseconds access time it seems to be way faster than every conventional hard drive. Review [ENG]: G.Skill FS-25S2-64GB 2.5″ Solid State Disk Drive

Darco | October 24, 2008

Let’s knock the OEM / ODM thing out first. There are several companies that are selling the Samsung drive, including Samsung. This is common in the computer hardware world and easy to sort out for the end user and hardware reviewer. Basically, what the end user will want to do is, if the product is deserving, purchase the one that has the lowest cost and the longest warranty. Luckily the G.Skill variant has the lowest cost when compared to the Samsung and OCZ drives and by a large amount. When it comes to performance the G.Skill SLC based drive is the benchmark in which all others should be compared. The drive is fast in all of our benchmarks, a task that is not exactly easy to do, as we proved in the Crucial SLC review. It isn’t going to matter if you are running a large database or installing this drive in your notebook, the drive is simply fast and everything you run off of it will benefit from faster load times and overall “snappiness”.  G.Skill FS-25S2-64GB SSD @ Tweaktown

Review [ENG]: Seagate’s Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB hard drive

Darco | October 22, 2008

The first terabyte hard drive debuted at $345, or a whopping 35 cents per gigabyte. Hard drive prices have plummeted since, with terabyte models currently selling for between $120 and $150. Surprisingly, though, the Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB doesn’t carry much of a price premium. The drive is widely available for less than $190, which works out to around 12 cents per gigabyte. That’s still a higher cost per gigabyte than your average terabyte model, but much less than we’d expect from the industry’s new high-water mark in capacity. Seagate’s Barracuda 1.5TB @ Tech Report

Review [ENG]: 500 GB Hard Disk Drive Round-Up

Darco | October 20, 2008

We found out a lot of interesting information about the 500 GB hard disk drives available on the market today. In summary, not all 500 GB drives are equal. We have clearly two winners: the new Western Digital RE3, which is targeted to the enterprise market, and Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, which is a mainstream product and thus the 500 GB hard disk drive that we recommend to the average user. Samsung HD502IJ in an option only if you can’t find Seagate Barracuda 7200.11. All other models should be avoided. 500 GB HDD Round-Up @ HardwareSecrets

Review [ENG]: Western Digital 300 GB VelociRaptor Serial ATA Hard Drive

Darco | October 16, 2008

Western Digital may be marketing their new VelociRaptor family of high-speed hard drives as enterprise-class hard drives but they are also very popular with hardware enthusiasts who just cannot resist their 10,000 RPM spindle speed. Everything just seems a little faster when you use a hard drive that spins at such a high speed. To cater to this exclusive group of enthusiasts, Western Digital first introduced the Raptor and Raptor X hard drives with capacities of 36 GB to 150 GB. These Raptors have now evolved into the next-generation Western Digital VelociRaptor hard drives, that not only boast twice the storage capacity but also managed to do it in a much smaller 2.5″ drive form factor!
